Redevelopment of the old cottages at boland st...

Redevelopment of the old cottages at boland st offering a socially responsible alternative to city living through a modestly scaled and priced apartment development. we are super excited to reveal the artist impression for the redevelopment of the boland st cottages site. over 20 years ago the cottages were severely damaged in a fire and left to fall into decay. we were flattered to be offered the opportunity to design the redevelopment of the property and bring life back to this space. the client brief was to acknowledge the building in times gone by, whilst delivering contemporary and accessible accommodation. of highest priority for both parties is to respect the past while looking forward to the future. the design philosophy that developed out of this is to remember the cottages within the facade of the building, especially the inherent features of the cottages — showcasing, celebrating and reflecting the story of the cottages. if possible, the brick walls will be retained and incorporated in place and any salvaged bricks used at the street edge for new lower walls incorporating seating and plantings. representing the virtually non-existent roof will be achieved cutting a brick pattern of the roof and chimneys into steel above street level. these will offer some privacy to the first-floor apartments. the modestly scaled building will stand just 16 meters high, creating 28 contemporary apartments with the availability of parking. we hope you’re just as excited to see this development re-activate one of launceston’s most well known, divisive and neglected sites and we can’t wait to see this project come together! #chasewonder
