Launceston is at the heart of the traditional homeland of the Stoney Creek people, belonging to the Tyerrenotepanner, Letteremairrener and Panninher clans. The clans lived here for many thousands of generations, above the floodplains where the three rivers kanamaluka, pleepertoommerlar, and lakekeller meet.
