What is Kiva, and how does it work?

We're glad you asked!

Kiva is an international nonprofit, with a mission to expand financial access to help underserved communities thrive and in some cases, provide relief when crises may arise.

They do this by crowdfunding loans and unlocking capital for the underserved, improving the quality and cost of financial services, and addressing the underlying barriers to financial access around the world. Through Kiva's work, students can pay for tuition, women can start businesses, farmers are able to invest in equipment and families can afford needed emergency care.

By lending as little as $25 on Kiva, you can be part of the solution and make a real difference in someone’s life... and, 100% of every dollar you lend on Kiva goes to funding loans!

We encourage you to head over to their website where you can read more about Kiva's COVID-19 response.

Benilda's story

Benilda applied for another loan through Kiva because she needed working capital to supply inventory for her business in El Salvador, South America. With this loan and these funds, she will buy corn and limes and cover the existing demand for her product. With each loan invested in her tortilla business, Benilda has been able to solidify and grow her business, subsequently earning income to support her family.

We’re proud to have been able to support Benilda and her business through funding this Kiva loan. This type of loan is special because it supports single mothers that are sole contributors to their household income.

Jhimy Ommar's story

Jhimy Ommar is a young man, 25 years old, who recently became a father - his baby is 3 months old. Jimmy and his family live in Patacamaya, Bolivia.

He asked for a loan from Kiva, via field partner Sembrar Sartawi IFD to purchase balanced feed so his dairy cows produce good milk. This type of loan helps assist rural farmers to ‘smooth’ their income and protect against the effects of climate change.

We’re excited to be supporting Jimmy and his family through this Kiva loan, to play our small part in helping to enable Jimmy and his family to live a better quality of life.
