New hotel development for Hobart
Standing approximately 55 metres tall, this is a landmark project for Hobart and Tasmania and will be the largest hotel and the tallest building in the state.
S. Group were engaged by Fragrance Group to prepare the design for a 256 room, 15 storeys, 4-star hotel in central Hobart, with large scale conference facilities, commercial spaces, wellness centre and spa, cafe and restaurant. They were also charged with designing the building as a response to Hobart’s historical context. The design of The Collins Street Hobart utilises space efficiently. The building is designed in two components; the podium and the tower, which aesthetically helps minimise the visual scale of the building and its impact on the location. The façade and exterior of the podium use different materials, tone and space, providing the perception of reducing the weight of the building and creating a lighter looking structure.
S. Group were not only responsible for the design but were also engaged to assist in navigating the political landscape of Hobart’s evolution and growth as a city. The development’s 1000 seat conference room and 256 hotel rooms are key in this period of transition for Hobart.
The conference facilities will establish Hobart on the map as a conference destination with the ability to host large national and international conferences. Its accommodation capacity will also make a significant impact, as studies have proven that Hobart is clearly in need of hotel rooms.
With the development approvals currently pending, the development will begin construction in late 2018. Following a construction investment of approximately $55M, the development will bring continued benefit to Tasmania by creating a projected 600 full-time jobs and yearly benefit to the Tasmanian economy of $16M.
