A multi-million-dollar development proposed for Elizabeth Street in North Hobart will commence construction later in 2020, after receiving planning approval late last year.

The site, which was previously an old service station and trailer hire site, will now house 28 apartments ranging from 1- to 3-bedroom offerings, all with car parking.

S. Group’s Director and architect Sam Haberle has been working with owners and developers of the land for 2 years to determine what will work best for the local context of the site, as well as working to address demands for smaller living environments in Hobart.

Mr Haberle said the site had become an eyesore in the context of the beautiful surrounding architecture.

“The architectural form of the development sympathizes with the local context through the juxtaposition of materiality and movement in the façade”, said Mr Haberle.

By offering a number of smaller well-designed apartments, rather than a selection of larger apartments, the development hopes to address cultural and social responsibility.

“We feel there is a gap in the market for quality one bedroom apartments that are within close proximity to the city”, Mr Haberle said.

The apartments will be available off the plan within 3 months, with construction expected to commence in Spring 2020.
